How Is Periodic Maintenance of Industrial Robots Performed?

Why Is Industrial Robot Maintenance Important?

ABB robots are widely used today in the automotive, white goods, food and logistics sectors. Although these robots deliver high precision and continuous operating performance, serious failures can occur if they are not maintained regularly.

The purpose of periodic maintenance is not only to fix failures but to prevent them from happening. Unplanned downtime can cost businesses thousands in lost production every hour. That is why ABB robots should be placed on a regular maintenance programme in line with the manufacturer's recommendations.

Daily Checks

Operators are advised to perform quick checks on the robot at the start of every shift.

Points to check:

  • Whether there are any oil leaks on the robot

  • Condition of cables and hoses

  • Operation of the emergency stop systems

  • Abnormal noise during robot movements

  • Error messages on the HMI screen

These simple checks allow many major failures to be detected early.

Monthly Maintenance Tasks

During monthly maintenance, the overall condition of the robot should be inspected in detail.

Tasks to be carried out:

  • Cleaning the fans

  • Checking the filters

  • Checking that connector connections are tight

  • Inspecting the cable carrier systems

  • Testing the safety equipment

Oil Change and Axis Motor Maintenance

The motors on the robot axes operate under constant load. Over time, metal particles can form in the oil, which shortens motor life.

The oil should be changed at the specified operating hours and an oil analysis should be performed.

Controller Maintenance

ABB controllers are the brain of the robot system. Fan failures or overheating can shorten the life of the electronic boards.

Controller maintenance should regularly include:

  • Fan replacements

  • Filter cleaning

  • Power connections

  • Battery checks

Robot Backups

A system backup must always be taken during maintenance. An up-to-date backup is critical for getting production back up quickly in the event of a disk failure or software problem.

Conclusion

Regular maintenance of ABB robots increases production efficiency, reduces unplanned downtime and extends equipment life. The cost of preventive maintenance is very low compared to the cost of major failures.

What Are Collaborative Robots (Cobots)?

Collaborative robots, or cobots, are a new generation of robot technology that can share the same workspace with people.
